📄 Product Description
Unified Daughterboard C5 — clean USB-C connection for your custom build
The Unified Daughterboard C5 is a versatile USB-C daughterboard for custom keyboard builds. It separates the USB-C port from the PCB and relocates it to the case edge — connected via a flexible cable. This has clear advantages: the USB-C connection sits cleanly and stably in the case, mechanical stress from plugging and unplugging is kept away from the PCB, and the board can be built more modularly. A proven, reliable solution for high-quality custom builds.
Why a daughterboard?
In many custom keyboards, the USB-C port isn't soldered directly onto the PCB but brought to the case edge via a separate small board — the daughterboard. This offers several advantages:
- Mechanical relief — the forces from plugging and unplugging act on the robust daughterboard, not on the sensitive main PCB
- Clean port positioning — the USB-C port sits exactly flush in the case cutout
- Modularity — in case of a defect, the daughterboard can simply be replaced without replacing the entire PCB
- Flexibility — a PCB without a fixed USB port can be used in different cases with varying port positions
Cable choice: JST-SH or PicoMolex EZMate
You choose the matching cable variant for your PCB at checkout:
- JST-SH to JST-SH — the common standard for many custom PCBs with a JST-SH connection
- JST-SH to PicoMolex EZMate — for PCBs with an EZMate connection, such as our MK60MX, MK65MX, and MK65MXW PCBs. The EZMate connector is more precise, smaller, and more reliable than classic JST connectors.
Every package includes two cables — 1× 15 cm and 1× 20 cm — so you can use the right length depending on your case layout and the position of the connection.
Compatibility
The Unified Daughterboard C5 is directly tuned for our in-house MK60MX, MK65MX, and MK65MXW PCBs. Beyond that, it's compatible with many other custom builds using a Unified C5 daughterboard — an established quasi-standard in the custom keyboard scene. With the matching cable variant (JST-SH or EZMate), it connects to a broad range of PCBs. As always with custom builds, it's recommended to cross-check the required connection before purchase.
Note: Only the daughterboard including the chosen cables is offered here. PCB, switches, keycaps, and case are not included.
