📄 Product Description
Agar — KBDfans' latest take on the HHKB layout
The KBDfans Agar follows in the footsteps of iconic predecessors like the Tofu, Pebble, and D60 — KBDfans' newest, thoughtful take on the classic HHKB layout. What makes the Agar special is the combination of elegant, curvy industrial design, an uncompromisingly engineered silicone block mount system, and an unusually crisp, "addictive" sound profile. Available with us as a complete barebone kit — you only need to add your switches and keycaps. Important: The Agar supports ANSI layout only, as the HHKB layout originates from the American typing tradition.

Two versions — you decide the switch world
We offer the Agar in both official configurations KBDfans developed:
- MX Hot-Swap Version — with 1.6 mm non-flex-cut MX wired hot-swap PCB and polycarbonate (PC) plate. Compatible with all standard MX switches (3- and 5-pin), switches can be swapped without soldering. Ideal for modding enthusiasts who regularly sample or swap switches.
- EC Version — with EC PCB and aluminum plate. Specifically developed for electrocapacitive switches from Tecsee and Aeboards — a new generation of switches that combines the typing feel of classic Topre boards with modern custom-build standards.
Both versions share case design, mounting system, bottom weight, and foam kit — the difference lies purely in the PCB and plate setup.
Curvy case design with character
Instead of relying on classic, angular case lines, the Agar features a flowing, curvy design concept. Gently curved edges run across nearly the entire case — the transition between surfaces is seamless and harmonious. A unique design element: the angled corner at the front right, which gives the keyboard an instantly recognizable profile. On the sides, arc-shaped cutouts create a sleek, elegant appearance — the Agar never looks bulky, always precise.

Copper bottom weight with "Starry Sea" engraving
On the underside sits a substantial copper bottom weight that gives the Agar both visual and acoustic substance. The highlight: the finely engraved "Starry Sea" motif — a poetic reference to the journey every custom-build enthusiast takes through their hobby. The copper harmonizes with both aluminum and polycarbonate cases, creating an appealing visual contrast.

Silicone block mount system — the game changer
Inside, the Agar uses the innovative silicone block mount system: specially shaped, precision-molded silicone blocks replace classic screw or gasket constructions. The advantages are significant:
- Exceptionally easy barebone build — plate and PCB can be installed or removed in seconds
- Flexible, cushioned typing feel — the silicone blocks yield in a controlled way and absorb harsh vibrations
- No fiddly gasket strips — forgetting which gasket goes where is a thing of the past
- Consistent pressure distribution across the entire plate
The system was specifically developed for the Agar and optimized through many iterations — especially for builders who want a clean, fast assembly without custom-build frustration, this is a real highlight.
Magnetic pogo-pin daughterboard connectors
The PCB is connected to the USB port via a magnetic daughterboard with gold-plated pogo-pin contacts — no fragile ribbon cables, no risk during disassembly. You can remove the PCB anytime without worrying about damaged cables. Strong magnets keep the connection reliable until you actively detach it.
HHKB layout — minimalist & efficient
The HHKB layout has been a favorite of programmers, Vim users, and anyone who values efficient typing for decades. The Agar offers the classic 60-key HHKB layout (technically 59 keys) with:
- Split backspace for separate backspace and backslash keys
- Stepped caps lock with characteristic height stepping
- Compact bottom row with centered spacebar
- Minimal footprint — perfect for clean, focused setups
Note: The Agar supports only the ANSI layout — no ISO. Anyone needing a German layout with umlauts and ß should reach for an ISO-capable keyboard. Anyone comfortable with ANSI (or who actually prefers it — many programmers do) gets one of the most elegant 60% custom builds currently on the market with the Agar.
VIA / VIAL support & RGB underglow
Both PCB versions are fully customizable:
- MX Hot-Swap PCB: VIA compatible — remap any key, configure layers and macros directly in the browser
- EC PCB: VIAL compatible — same flexibility with the open-source alternative VIAL
Both PCBs also feature RGB underglow that shines through the case — particularly impressive on polycarbonate cases, more subtle on aluminum variants.
Foam kit for balanced acoustics
The package includes a complete foam kit that, together with the silicone block mount and copper bottom weight, ensures a clean, controlled sound profile. Hollow resonances are absorbed, and the typical "custom-build thock" comes through cleanly.
Premium materials & multiple color variants
The Agar is available in both aluminum and polycarbonate cases — both materials have their own charm. Aluminum offers a more substantial typing feel with higher self-weight and a more muted sound, polycarbonate delivers a softer sound and lets the RGB underglow shine especially beautifully. The exact color options can be found in the configurator and depend on our current availability.
Important note on the EC version
The EC version is specifically developed for the EC switches from Tecsee and Aeboards. It is not directly compatible with Topre switches — anyone wanting to use Topre switches would need a custom-machined plate, and keycaps would sit about 1 mm higher than intended. We therefore recommend sticking with the officially supported Tecsee/Aeboards switches for the EC version.
Who is the Agar for?
- HHKB layout lovers who want an elegant 60% custom build with modern engineering
- Programmers & Vim users who appreciate a minimalist layout with split backspace and stepped caps lock
- Custom-build beginners looking for an easy, frustration-free build thanks to the silicone block mount
- EC switch enthusiasts who want to experience the Topre-like typing feel in a modern custom build
- Sound-conscious builders who want a crisp, clearly defined "custom sound"
Note: The Agar is a barebone kit. Switches and keycaps are not included and must be purchased separately. For the EC version, only the Tecsee/Aeboards EC switches are recommended — Topre switches are not directly compatible.
