Agar Mini — the elegance of the Agar series, now in the 40% world

The Agar Mini is the latest evolution of KBDfans' renowned Agar series — translating the iconic design language of the family into a significantly more compact form factor. What the original Agar offered in 60%, comes here in a 40% layout variant designed as the perfect mobile companion with its elegant, curved silhouette and ultra-low front height. Unbox, plug in or connect, type — whether at the desk, in the office, or on the go.

What exactly is a 40% keyboard?

If you've never worked with a 40% keyboard, you might wonder at first sight: Where are the F-row and arrow keys? The answer: all still usable — but on layers. When you hold the Fn key, letters become arrows, other keys become F-keys and special functions. The advantage: your hands stay in the home row, you barely have to reach, and the keyboard packs full functionality into the most compact space — perfect for mobile setups, minimalist desks, or anyone who simply enjoys a reduced typing experience.

13U layout — the more elegant answer to 40%

While most 40% keyboards opt for a 12U width, the Agar Mini deliberately comes in a 13U variant. The difference: in 12U layouts, modifier keys are often shortened to 0.5U, leading to a visually cramped impression. With 13U, modifiers retain standard size — the result is a significantly more harmonious, fluid overall appearance. The layout philosophy bows to the classic HHKB style while utilizing a standard staggered key arrangement. This makes the Agar Mini feel familiar from the start — no long adjustment period, low learning curve.

Sculptural design with complex curves

The Agar Mini challenges the conventional perception of an aluminum keyboard. Instead of sharp, angular lines, the silhouette is defined by a dynamic interplay of fluid curves. The arched side-profile line feels both restrained and confidently present — an effect achievable only through complex compound curves in manufacturing. This elaborate processing isn't just for show: it defines the entire tactile and visual experience of the Agar family.

The front profile also makes a clear statement: instead of a straight edge, the front lip flows in an organic, gently inward-tapering curve. This gives the keyboard an inviting, "light" appearance that aptly summarizes the entire design concept of the Agar series.

9° typing angle and stainless steel weight

With a 9° typing angle, the Agar Mini takes a confident, ergonomically optimized position — without requiring a wrist rest, since the ultra-low front offers your wrist a relaxed support. Inside, you'll find an interchangeable bottom weight made from PVD mirror-polished stainless steel — a visual statement and at the same time an audible contribution to the sound profile.

Proprietary silicone mounting system — the assembly revolution

The Agar Mini uses the same newly developed mounting system as the original Agar — designed to completely replace classic O-ring systems. The system eliminates the typical pain points:

  • No specific gasket ring sizes needed
  • No clip-in stabilizer issues
  • No complex foam configurations

The core: a precisely manufactured silicone element with 50A hardness, molded in one piece. This allows the build core to be installed or removed in about two seconds — an efficiency unmatched in the custom world. Despite the simple construction, the system delivers stable, deep acoustics and a balanced typing feel that rivals top-tier custom builds.

Magnetic pogo-pin daughterboard — no more cables

A real innovation: the "Serpentine Adaptive Connector". Instead of a classic ribbon cable between PCB and daughterboard, a magnetic pogo-pin system connects both components. This has clear advantages:

  • No more cable wear from repeatedly opening and closing the case
  • Faster assembly without fiddly cable work
  • Higher long-term reliability thanks to contactless connection

A thoughtful detail rarely seen in this consequence in the custom world.

Three PCB options — wired, dual-mode wireless, or EC

We offer the Agar Mini with all three PCB versions, so you can choose the right variant for your workflow:

1. Wired Edition (MX hot-swap, QMK)

  • 1.6 mm PCB with hot-swap sockets for solder-free switch swaps
  • QMK firmware with full compatibility for VIA, VIAL, and AVA
  • Caps Lock LED support
  • USB-C wired — perfect for stationary setups
  • Compatible with MX-style switches

2. Dual-Mode Wireless Edition (MX hot-swap, ZMK)

  • 1.6 mm PCB, hot-swap, MX compatible
  • ZMK firmware with ultra-low power consumption and stable Bluetooth connection
  • 800 mAh battery — manufacturer claims up to 2–3 months of battery life with normal use
  • KBDfans-specific ZMK optimizations: indicator light support, faster Bluetooth connection, planned AVA integration
  • Configuration via zmk.studio
  • Compatible with all major operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS)

3. EC Edition (Naevies EC, QMK)

  • 1.6 mm EC PCB for Naevies EC switches — a fundamentally different typing experience compared to classic MX switches, with characteristic "Topre-like" sound and feel
  • QMK firmware with VIAL support
  • Caps Lock LED support
  • USB-C wired

This way, the Agar Mini covers three very different use cases — from wired standard custom over premium wireless to the EC variant for typing enthusiasts looking for a unique feel.

Plate selection in the configurator

The Agar Mini gives you a choice of multiple plate materials that significantly influence typing feel and sound profile — from harder aluminum plates with pronounced acoustics to softer materials for a warmer, more dampened sound. The plate options available for your configuration can be selected directly in the configurator.

Spacebar layout: 3U+3U or 6U

The Agar Mini uses a relatively rare 3U+3U or 6U spacebar arrangement — matching Cherry screw-in stabilizers with 3U wires are included, so you don't have to worry about this aspect.

Included: carry case + barebone hook

For maximum mobility, a matching carry case is included directly in the package. The Agar Mini is thus perfectly prepared for travel, commuting, or moving between desk and café. Additionally, there's a barebone hook — a clever tool that lets you simply lift and remove the build core without damaging the case.

Notes on craftsmanship

  • USB compatibility: Maximum USB connector size 9 mm diameter × 8 mm length — for very thick USB-C connectors, we recommend checking before purchase
  • Foam recommendation: We recommend using the included case foam, otherwise there's some risk that the PCB may touch the bottom
  • Counterweight: Please don't tighten the bottom weight excessively — too much tension can damage the case
  • PC variant: With the polycarbonate variant, the internal weight is shipped separately and must be installed by you upon arrival — this protects the PC case during transport

Note on the 40% community

If you're new to the 40% world, the 40% Keyboard Community is a great starting point — with wiki pages on layouts, configuration, and modding as well as an active Discord community.
