📄 Product Description
Tofu TKL R2 – minimalist TKL custom with four PCB options
The TOFU series takes its design cue from its namesake: purity and versatility. Clean, architectural lines reminiscent of a simple block of tofu – everything superfluous stripped away, leaving the fundamental essence of a typing instrument. The Tofu TKL R2 brings that approach to the TKL format while opening it up to customisation: case material, mounting style, plate, weight bar and four PCB variants let you shape weight, sound and typing feel deliberately.
What's new in R2?
- Top case exterior: the outer corner radius has been increased from R0.5 to R1.
- Top case interior: the inner bezel transition changes from a chamfer (C-angle) to a fillet (R-angle).
- Silicone dampeners: now inserted into the top case rather than the plate.
- Daughterboard cover: anodised aluminium with an engraved icon instead of wood.
- Exclusive colorways: the three limited-edition HTM colours now feature a horizontal textured finish.
Case materials: alu, copper or stainless steel
Like its namesake, the appeal lies in versatility. The top case is available in aluminium or PC, the bottom case in aluminium, copper or stainless steel. That choice directly determines mass, sound character and feel: aluminium stays light and balanced, while copper and stainless steel add considerably more density and dampen vibrations more strongly – up to 4.9 kg in a finished build. The weight bar is available to match in aluminium silver, copper or stainless steel.
Finish
The case is available in two finish families: sandblasted anodised aluminium with a silky-smooth feel, or E-coating with a fine, matte texture. Both highlight the clean, sculpted lines. Stonewash and RAW variants are available alongside a PC transparent version.
Visual language: the exposed rear accent
The bottom case features an exposed rear accent that splits the USB port face into two distinct sections. This construction enables striking two-tone colour combinations – immediately captivating yet enduringly timeless.
Force Break system
Custom-moulded Force Break silicone pads create a buffer between case components. They dampen case vibration and eliminate unwanted metallic "ping" for a cleaner, calmer sound.
Mounting & typing feel
The Tofu TKL R2 offers two mounting styles:
- Top mount: the mounting points are deliberately placed away from the spacebar area to minimise resonance and hollowness – resulting in a more uniform, satisfying sound signature. Silicone dampeners physically decouple the plate from the upper housing, mitigating resonance conduction at its origin. Overall a firmer, more direct feedback.
- PCB silicone gasket mount: a similar support distribution, but tuned for a maximally soft, bouncy and flexible typing experience.
Combined with the solder PCB, a plateless build is also possible – the option for maximum flex and a particularly deep sound profile.
PCB options
All PCBs are 1.6 mm thick, made from FR4, with a magnetic connector to the daughterboard.
- Wired (solder or hot-swap): supports AVA, VIAL and VIA. The solder version additionally allows a plateless build. Latency: 1.25 ms.
- Dual-mode hot-swap: wired and Bluetooth, powered by ZMK. The ultra-low-power design delivers over 6 months of runtime from a single 1000 mAh battery. No 2.4 GHz mode – the firmware is based on an open-source solution without a 2.4 GHz component.
- HE (magnetic) hot-swap: developed together with NNKS and focused on low latency: a new daisy-chain architecture, a stable 0.01 mm actuation point resolution, a true 8K polling rate (reducible in the configurator) and a web-based configurator for on-the-fly adjustments. Latency: 0.125 ms.
Layout options
- WK
- WKL
Important note: the HE PCB works with the WK layout only.
Hall Effect compatibility note
Hall Effect switches are not compatible with regular MX PCBs and vice versa: the HE PCB only works with magnetic switches and cannot run mechanical MX switches. If you choose the HE version, you'll need magnetic switches accordingly.
Who is the Tofu TKL R2 for?
The Tofu TKL R2 is for anyone after an understated TKL with high material quality – and for tinkerers who want to genuinely shape their own board. Between case material, mounting style, plate, weight bar and PCB, the board can be pulled from a light aluminium build to a solid copper or stainless steel bottom, and from a firm top mount to a soft, plateless flex build. The HE PCB also makes it interesting for gaming-oriented users who value low latency and adjustable actuation points – while dual-mode is there for anyone who wants to lose the cable.
