Wind Borne60 – 60% custom by Niuniu with MX or EC PCB

A rare Niuniu 60%: the Wind Borne60 is modelled on a leaf carried by the wind – subtle inward curves meet a clean, sculptural weight profile. The design balances fluid aesthetics with structural precision, aiming for a serene, focused typing experience. On the back sits a custom sculpted weight carrying the "Wind" character (风) as its design motif.

The 60% format in a nutshell

A 60% layout drops the function row, arrow keys and navigation cluster – everything else lives on a function layer. The result is an especially compact, tidy board with plenty of mouse room. The Wind-borne60 offers three layout variants: WK (with Windows keys), WKL (winkeyless) and HHKB (with split backspace and blockers in the bottom-row style of the Happy Hacking Keyboard). The spacebar additionally sits slightly recessed into the case – a distinctive front design feature.

Case & weight

The case is CNC-machined from aluminium and, depending on the colourway, anodised or spray-coated. The sculpted back weight runs across the rear as a design element and carries the wind-themed logo – tying the name and the form language together.

Top mount

The Wind Borne60 uses a top mount with screws locked internally between the top and bottom housing – the exterior stays free of visible screw points. The top mount delivers the classic, slightly firmer and defined typing feel with even feedback across the whole board.

MX or EC version

The board comes in two fundamentally different versions:

  • MX version: 1.6 mm PCB (non-flex cut) as a solder or hot-swap variant, each wired-only or with tri-mode wireless. It pairs with a black anodised aluminium plate.
  • EC version: 1.6 mm PCB (non-flex cut) for electrostatic capacitive switches (supports Tec EC switches), likewise wired-only or with tri-mode wireless, combined with a stainless steel plate. Electrostatic capacitive boards work with domes and springs instead of mechanical contacts – known for their soft, cushioned typing feel and the characteristic "thock".

The wireless variants come with two batteries included. Connectivity runs via USB-C (magnetic daughterboard), Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz; keymapping is handled via VIAL.

EC compatibility note

The EC version is not compatible with mechanical MX switches – and vice versa: the EC PCB works exclusively with electrostatic capacitive components (domes, springs, sliders); MX switches cannot be used on it. Plates and stabiliser solutions also differ between the two versions. Choose one of the two worlds deliberately and pick your plate and accessories to match.

Who is the Wind Borne60 for?

The Wind Borne60 is for anyone after a compact, visually distinctive 60% – away from the standard rectangular tray towards an organic form language with character. With the choice between MX and EC it covers two entirely different typing philosophies: the classic mechanical keystroke or the soft, cushioned EC feel in the style of electrostatic capacitive classics. And with WK, WKL and HHKB layouts it speaks to minimalists and HHKB fans alike who want to realise their preferred layout in a custom case.
