Kafka — subtle design, radical performance

The Typface Kafka is a 65% custom keyboard taking a clear stance: uncompromising technology in an exceptionally clear design language. No RGB gimmicks, no visual tricks — instead, premium materials, a thoughtful acoustic profile, and the feel of a tailored custom build. On this page, you'll find the MX variant as a custom kit for classic mechanical builds.

 

Premium materials — aluminum, brass, and real wood

The Kafka combines three premium materials into a coherent whole:

• CNC-machined 6061 aluminum for the case — precise craftsmanship, anodized surfaces with timeless character
• Solid C360 brass bottom weight — provides desk stability and a deeper, fuller sound
• Real walnut wood accent — sealed with water-based urethane, leaving the natural grain visible while permanently protecting the wood

The interplay of anodized aluminum, weighty brass, and the natural warmth of walnut wood gives the Kafka a distinct "designer" character — without being reduced to pure aesthetics.

 

Two color variants

We offer the Kafka MX in the following color variants:

• Black with walnut accent — the timeless, dark classic. The deep black of the aluminum makes the warm grain of the walnut accent stand out particularly well.
• Warm Grey with walnut accent — a warm, neutral grey tone that harmonizes elegantly with the natural walnut wood. Perfect for setups in warm, muted color palettes.

Dual mounting system — gasket isolation or O-ring

One of the central features of the Kafka is the dual mounting system. Both mounting variants are included and can be swapped with minimal tools — letting you adapt the typing feel of your setup to your preference:

• Gasket isolation — dampened, controlled, and bassy. Perfect for a deep, calm sound profile with significantly reduced resonance and a slightly softer typing feel.
• O-ring mount — bouncy, lively, with a higher sound character. Delivers a more pronounced bottom-out and more open acoustics — ideal for sound-conscious setups that appreciate the "alive" feel of classic O-ring builds.

The package includes 5 plate gaskets in 60A hardness as well as 1 O-ring in 50A hardness.

Wired hot-swap MX PCB with RP2040 and Vial support

We offer the Kafka with the wired hot-swap MX PCB in two layout variants:

• DE-ISO layout — perfect for German/European workflows with all umlauts and ß
• ANSI layout — the classic US standard for programmers and ANSI fans

The PCB uses an RP2040 MCU, Gateron hot-swap sockets, and the Fly Daughterboard by Geon with JST-SH connector. ESD protection is integrated, and the Vial software compatibility lets you remap every key, record macros, and set up layers — directly in the browser, without driver installation.

Aluminum plate included — plate options expandable

The package includes the aluminum plate, delivering a precise, firmer typing feel with pronounced acoustics. Additional plate materials are available as optional accessories:

• Carbon fiber (CF) — light, with a slightly softer bottom-out
• Polypropylene (PP) — maximum flex, very soft bottom-out
• POM — balanced between soft and firm, with characteristically deep sound
• Polycarbonate (PC) — popular "all-rounder," softer and warmer than aluminum
• FR-4 — slightly softer than aluminum, with a balanced sound profile

Acoustics & typing feel

The Kafka is designed to deliver the feel of a tailored custom build without complicated modding processes. The combination of precisely machined aluminum case, heavy brass weight, and acoustically thought-through case interior provides a clean, controlled sound signature. Depending on the chosen mounting method (gasket or O-ring), you experience two distinctly different acoustic characters — both at a high level.

Clear design language — no RGB distraction

The Kafka deliberately omits RGB lighting. The design philosophy targets the essentials: form, material, and sound. A reduced, focused custom keyboard for users seeking a thoughtful, durable tool — not the next glowing gaming setup.

Note on material variation

Since the Kafka uses real natural materials, small natural variations are to be expected:

• Walnut wood can vary in grain, color, and texture — small knots, mineral streaks, or natural markings may occur
• Brass can naturally oxidize over time — a protective coating is applied; light oxidation during transport or use is still possible and considered normal

These natural characteristics underline the handcrafted character of the Kafka and are not defects.
